Frequently asked questions
Why validate a tax ID?
Before extending credit to a new business customer, before claiming a GST/VAT input credit on a high-value invoice, or before lodging a return with cross-border B2B figures. Validation catches typos and entirely fake numbers in seconds. For high-value transactions, follow up with a name-and-address match against the registry.
Is the registry data live?
This tool checks the format only (digits, length, checksum). For live registry data we link out to the official source: ABN Lookup (Australia), HMRC (UK), VIES (EU), IRS (US), NZBN Register (New Zealand). All are free.
Why doesn't the US support live lookup?
The IRS does not publish a free public EIN lookup. The standard way to confirm a US EIN is to request a Form W-9 from the business, which contains the EIN and the registered name. For public companies, the SEC EDGAR system has the EIN on filings.
What about Canadian Business Numbers?
Not in this tool yet. Canada uses a 9-digit Business Number (BN) administered by the CRA. There's a verification tool on the CRA website for GST/HST registration status. We may add it in a future revision.
