What sales tax rate should I use?
Sales tax in the US is set by state, county, and city. Rates range from 0% in Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon to 10%+ in some local jurisdictions. Look up your destination state's rate; for services and intangible goods many states do not tax at all. This generator lets you enter whatever rate applies.
Do I need an EIN to invoice?
Not always. Sole proprietors can invoice using their SSN, though using an EIN keeps personal numbers off your documents. LLCs and corporations should use their EIN. Clients may request a W-9 before paying; the EIN is what you provide on the W-9.
What is the difference between an invoice and a receipt?
An invoice is a request for payment (sent before or after delivery, payment expected). A receipt is proof of payment (sent after the client has paid). This generator produces invoices; once a client pays, you would typically mark it paid and reissue as a receipt, or send a simple acknowledgement.
